What exactly is the G2 Performance Lab?

The G2 Performance Lab is the research and performance development engine inside G2 Esports. We combine sport science, psychology, and coaching expertise to help G2 players, coaches, and teams perform at their best – and to push the boundaries of what performance means in esports.

Is this just for G2 players, or does it extend further?

The Lab’s primary focus is G2 teams and staff, but our reach has a broader goal – to advance the understanding of performance in esports more generally. Some of our studies involve players from outside G2, and our findings are shared with the wider esports and sport science community.

What is a “holistic ecological approach” and why does it matter?

The lab works in collaboration with leading sport science institutions and maintains ties with academic research communities. This ensures our work is grounded in rigorous methodology, not just gut feeling or trend-chasing.

What projects is the lab working on right now?

In 2026 we’re running four active projects: a peer learning programme for esports coaches, an observational study on how elite teams structure their practice, a study exploring mental performance and cold water face immersion in FPS players, and a series of workshops on nutrition and sleep for G2 teams.

Will the research be published?

Yes. One of the lab’s core goals is contributing to the broader esports and sport science literature. We aim to publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at relevant conferences, so the insights reach beyond G2.

Can I participate in a study even if I’m not a professional player or coach?

Absolutely. Our current fatigue study is open to players of all levels – you don’t need to be a pro. Each study has its own eligibility criteria, which we share clearly before you sign up. If you are a regular player or coach with a passion for the game, you’re likely a great fit.

What does participating in a study actually involve?

It varies by project. The current FPS study involves two in-person sessions in Cologne or Berlin, where you’ll play, complete concentration tasks, and take part in a cold water immersion protocol. Everything is voluntary, safe, and explained in full before you commit to anything.

Is my data kept private?

Yes. All research is conducted under ethical guidelines. Your personal data is kept confidential, and any published findings use anonymised or aggregated data. Full details are shared in the participant information sheet before any study begins.
